NEWS

Just 30 hard-core hypercars to be produced, each priced at $4 million and powered by a 625kW atmo V12

The wild new racetrack-only Pagani Huayra R has been revealed overnight and it appears to be a fitting swansong for the decade-old Pagani Huayra from the Italian hypercar-maker.

As expected, the 2021 Pagani Huayra R emerges with a naturally-aspirated 6.0-litre V12 that revs to 9000rpm and punches out no less than 625kW of power (850hp) at a stratospheric 8250rpm.

Maximum torque of 750Nm is produced between 5500rpm and an even higher 8300rpm.

The V12-R engine was co-developed over the past two years with Mercedes-AMG, with which Pagani has an engine supply deal until at least 2026.

The engine weighs just 198kg, forms a structural element of the car’s central monocoque and comes with 10,000km service intervals.

Matched to a HWA-supplied six-speed sequential gearbox and packaged within a scissor-doored, rear-wheel drive super-coupe that weighs just 1050kg (dry), the stripped-out hard-core track car promises blistering performance.

Just 30 examples will be produced before Pagani rolls out the replacement for its long-running Huayra, each priced at a cool €2.6 million ($A3.975m) plus local taxes.

Australian Pagani distributor Zagame Automotive advises that no Huayra Rs have yet been sold Down Under, where the $5.5 million Huayra Roadster became the nation’s most expensive new model and the first Pagani to be road-legal here in March 2018, following less than a handful of private imports prior to that.

The first Pagani to employ a non-turbo V12 is considerably more powerful (but delivers less torque) than the Mercedes-AMG-sourced 562kW/1000Nm-plus 6.0-litre twin-turbo V12 that powers its other models.

The high-revving naturally-aspirated V12 will vie with that of the Aston Martin Valkyrie, which will be road-registerable, for the title of world’s best-sounding production engine since it sounds just like an early-1990s Formula 1 car.

Also as expected, the most extreme Pagani hypercar ever features an elaborate motorsport-inspired aerodynamic package comprising a massive fixed rear wing, larger diffuser and other aero elements normally associated with Le Mans racers, such as a roof scoop.

Pagani said the aero package had a development target of 1000kg of downforce at 320km/h.

Pagani claims the Huayra R features “the highest level of automotive engineering and aerodynamic know-how” and bills it as “a laboratory car that incorporates the technology of future Pagani models”.

It is also described as “a celebration of performance, technology and art applied to a track car” and “the pinnacle of Pagani Automobili technological development”.

“In 2008 we were working on the Huayra, a very challenging and demanding project from an engineering and stylistic point of view,” said company boss Horacio Pagani.

“After so many years, I felt an overwhelming desire for freedom and that’s how the Zonda R came about, a track car free from constraints and regulations.

“Beautiful, high-performing and safe, the Huayra R, just like the Zonda R, is the freest, most extreme and performance-oriented Pagani car of all time.”

The exotic technologies of the Huayra R are too many to list here but include an exhaust system made from Inconel 625/718 alloy and incorporating 12 equal-length pipes with a thickness one-third that of traditional production cars.

It also has mufflers that can be fitted to meet the FIA noise limit of 110dB at some tracks.

The monocoque itself is manufactured from the latest composite technologies developed by the Atelier, such as Carbo-Titanium HP62-G2 and Carbo-Triax HP62, to which sub-frames made from chrome-molybdenum alloy steel are attached.

In conjunction with the powertrain, the rear sub-frame is claimed to increase the car’s flexural rigidity by 51 per cent and its torsional rigidity by 16 per cent compared to the road-going Huayra.

Inside, an FIA-spec heavy-duty safety cage is integrated into the central monocoque and incorporates special absorption structures made from composite materials at the front, sides and rear of the car.

Both seats are fully integrated into the carbon monocoque and are equipped with six-point safety belts and Nomex flame retardant material, while the carbon-fibre head restraints are also fitted with dedicated lateral protection.

Creature comforts extend to traction control, ABS map selection, radio communication controls and shift paddles on the quick-release steering wheel, which is also height- and reach-adjustable, plus a custom-made adjustable pedal set developed with AP Racing.

Secondary controls for the lights, engine maps, suspension maps and brake balance selector are on the centre console, and a high-resolution and fully-customisable motorsport dashboard display presents on-board telemetry and other vehicle data.

Suspension is via independent double wishbones made from forged aluminium alloy, with helical springs and electronically-controlled active shock absorbers, all mounted rigidly.

Claimed to be ‘world-class’, a Brembo braking package features brand-new CCM-R self-ventilated carbon-ceramic discs and racing pads, while Pirelli developed a slick version of its P Zero tyre “that offers maximum precision and a feeling of total control even to the non-professional driver”, says Pagani.

Wet versions are available too, and both tyres are fitted to 19-inch forged alloys supplied by APP Tech.

In North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, Pagani Huayra R buyers will be offered individual track days and tailor-made group events at internationally-renowned circuits, as part of the Arte In Pista (‘art on the track’) program.
